Ostrava is with more than 300.000 inhabitants the third largest city in the Czech Republic. It is located in the north-east, close to the Polish border and it is also the administrative center of the Moravian-Silesian Region and of Ostrava-City District.
Ostrava is located at the confluence of the Ostravice, Oder, Lučina and Opava rivers. Its history and growth have been largely affected by exploitation and further use of the high quality black coal deposits discovered in the locality, giving the town the look of an industrial city and the nickname of the “steel heart of the republic”.
Most of the heavy industry companies are already closed down or transformed into non-industry projects, such as The Lower Area of Vitkovice, where a whole new area with museums, restaurants, exhibition centre and free time zones was built. The remaining inventory, however, was kept intact and got signed on the European Cultural Heritage list.
Besides other facilities, there is an airport in Ostrava (Ostrava-Mosnov). Ostrava is also an important traffic centre for buses and trains.
From Prague to Ostrava, it is 370 km. The train ride takes 3,5 hours. Private transfer takes more or less the same time.
